Chinese Province of Guangdong Faces Dangerous Floods: Thousands Evacuated

In the Chinese province of Guangdong, in the southeast of the country, large rivers and lakes are threatening to overflow their banks in many places and cause dangerous floods. Tens of thousands of people in the interior have already been evacuated and several smaller towns are already under water. The power has also gone out in several places.

Chinese authorities have issued a warning for the region’s 127 million people. Cities are also being asked to be careful.

Hours of the waterfall

Local weather stations say the situation is “terrible” and talk about levels of rain that only happen once every fifty years. Guangdong has been experiencing heavy rain and strong winds for days. Residents talk about a waterfall from the sky that lasts for hours. In some parts of the province there was heavy rain for 12 hours straight.

In Guangzhou, the provincial capital of 18 million people, reservoirs are full and parts of the city are at risk of flooding. There is a risk of flooding as the rain reaches the area

Other parts of China are also suffering from natural disasters. In Guangxi province, west of Guangdong, heavy winds have destroyed buildings and residents are also suffering from floods due to rain.
