Chinese President Xi Jinping praised the “hard-won social stability” in that Chinese region during a rare visit to Xinjiang. Human rights organizations and, among others, the Dutch House of Representatives accuse China of carrying out a genocide against the Uyghur population in Xinjiang. The Chinese government denies the allegations and says it has been fighting terrorism and Islamic extremism in the troubled region for years. Large numbers of Muslims are therefore locked up in ‘re-education camps’. The United Nations wrote in a report last year that China is guilty of serious human rights violations.

Little impression

Xi takes little notice of that criticism. He traveled to the provincial capital of Urumqi to give a speech on the development of Xinjiang. According to Chinese state media, the president stressed that stability should always be the priority for Xinjiang, as it is a precondition for development.

He allegedly urged local officials to “promote the sinification of Islam,” that is, to make the religion more Chinese. Xi wants to modernize the region in Chinese style and “build a beautiful Xinjiang that is united and harmonious, rich and prosperous.”
