Chinese President Xi Jinping to Skip G20 Summit Amid Growing China-India Tensions

Chinese President Xi Jinping will be absent from next week’s G20 summit in New Delhi, India. A number of officials familiar with the matter said. Tensions between China and India are expected to worsen further.

Tensions between China and India already threaten to hinder the issuance of a joint statement at the G20 summit, another person said. If no joint statement is issued at the summit, it will be the first time since the G20 framework was established in 1999.

Diplomacy officials from several countries involved in planning the summit said Xi had no intention of visiting New Delhi. Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to attend instead, one of the officials said. Another official said he expected another senior government official, not yet named, to attend. All of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is private.
