Chinese President Xi Jinping to Miss G20 Summit in India

Chinese President Xi Jinping will miss the G20 summit in India, which will be held in its capital New Delhi on September 9-10. Reuters was the first to report this, citing sources in the two countries, and later a diplomatic source for Vedomosti confirmed the information.

China will be represented at the annual forum by State Council Premier Li Qiang, sources in India told Reuters, without giving a reason for Xi’s refusal to attend. He has previously attended all summits, with the exception of the 2021 meeting in Rome during the coronavirus pandemic, but then he attended via video link. The Indians said from the very beginning that they did not intend to give the leaders such an opportunity in 2023, a source familiar with the position of the organizers told Vedomosti. In addition, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who very rarely travels outside the country, will not come to the summit from the leaders of the countries. Vedomosti sent inquiries to the Sherpa (G20 liaison assistant to the Prime Minister) of India, Amitabh Kant, and to the Indian Embassy in Russia.
