Jakarta –
Apple looks like it will have to work hard to win the hearts of consumers in China after launching iPhone 15 series. The reason is, Chinese netizens are more inclined to vote Huawei Mate 60 Pro than the iPhone 15.
The launch of the iPhone 15 series a few days ago sparked heated discussions on Chinese social media. Topics discussing the launch of the iPhone 15 series have been viewed more than 380 million times on Weibo, with more than 800,000 discussions, including posts, likes and comments.
Many Apple fans are praising the new 3nm chip in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Chinese netizens who like playing mobile games also welcome support for console class games such as Resident Evil 4 Remake which can be played on the iPhone 15 Pro.
But some Chinese social media users are torn between the iPhone 15 or the also recently launched Huawei Mate 60 Pro. A number of Chinese netizens feel skeptical about choosing cellphones made in the United States over cellphones made locally.
This was revealed from a survey conducted by the Sina news portal on Weibo social media which asked respondents whether they would buy the Huawei Mate 60 Pro or iPhone 15. As a result, 61,000 respondents chose Huawei Mate 60 Pro and 24,000 respondents chose the iPhone 15.
Chinese netizens who chose the Huawei Mate 60 Pro favored this cellphone because of its more sophisticated features. They compared the SOS feature via satellite on the Huawei Mate 60 Pro which can be used to call and send SMS, while the iPhone 15 can only send SMS.
“iPhone 15 can only send SOS messages via satellite using previous generation technology already used in the Huawei Mate 60, which fully supports satellite telephony,” said a Weibo user, as quoted by Reuters, Friday (15/9/2023).
China itself is one of the biggest markets for Apple. In recent years, Apple has dominated China’s premium cellphone market because Huawei’s cellphone business was hampered by sanctions from the US.
In the first half of 2023, Apple controls 67% of the market share for cellphones priced at USD 600 and above, while Huawei is in second place with 15.6%. But according to IDC, Apple’s dominance is predicted to decline slowly due to tighter competition with Huawei.
