Chinese Navy’s Nuclear Submarine Caught in Trap, Killing 55 Sailors

(Seoul = News 1) Reporter Kim Ye-seul = A Chinese nuclear submarine was reported to have fallen into a trap trying to catch a Western submarine, killing 55 sailors.

On the 3rd (local time), the Daily Mail cited a British confidential report and said, “The Chinese nuclear submarine 093-417 was caught in a trap intended to capture British and American submarines and a system error occurred.” The oxygen system malfunctioned, killing the captain and 21 officers. “As many as 55 Chinese sailors may have died, including 50,000,” the report said.

The report confirmed by the Daily Mail states that the incident occurred in the Yellow Sea on August 21.

British authorities believe the deaths were caused by hypoxia caused by a faulty system on the submarine, which is said to have struck chains and anchor obstacles used by the Chinese navy to trap American and allied submarines.

The report said 55 crew members, including 22 officers, 7 officer cadets, 9 non-commissioned officers, and 17 sailors, died in the accident.

A Royal Navy submariner told the Daily Mail: “If a nuclear submarine had become trapped and its batteries had died, the air purifiers and air handling systems could have eventually failed as well. “It would have led to suffocation or poisoning,” he explained.

He added: “The Royal Navy has kit to absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen in these situations, but other countries are likely not to have this type of technology.”

Although related claims were circulated on social media last August, China has officially denied that such an incident occurred.
