Chinese national with ties to Steve Bannon arrested in New York

A Chinese tycoon wanted in his country and linked to Steve Bannon, exasessor of the former US president Donald Trump, was arrested yesterday in New York and charged with defrauding supporters of his anti-Beijing activities out of about a billion dollars.

The Department of Justice accused Guo Wengui and his co-conspirator, Je Kin Ming, of stealing funds from those who participated in an investment scheme to buy luxury goods, including a yacht, a 4,600-square-meter mansion and a $3.5 million Ferrari car.

The crime occurred after the former real estate magnate fled China in 2014, after being accused by the courts of fraud and corruption, despite the fact that he had become a critical voice of alleged corruption within the Chinese government.

Four years later, he was also accused in Hong Kong of laundering millions of dollars of investment funds.
