The Business and Human Rights Resource Center reported that 39 Chinese mining companies were involved in 102 cases of suspected human rights and environmental violations between January 2021 and December 2022.
A spokesman for the organization said, “Our data show that violations of human rights and the environment are common in the exploration, extraction and conversion of transition metals (in the field of energy).”
Of the total cases that occurred, according to the report, in 18 countries, 27 were recorded in Indonesia, 16 in Peru, 12 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 11 in Burma, and 7 in Zimbabwe, as well as other countries.
China dominates the processing and purification of metals essential to the transition process, particularly copper, nickel and cobalt, used for example in batteries.
With the global demand for these minerals expected to increase six times by 2040, the organization called on China and countries where its companies are active to take “urgent measures” to limit the harmful effects that accompany the transition process.
