Chinese Manufacturing Company Fires Employees for Failing 5KM Company Race: Court Orders Compensation

Jakarta

A manufacturing company in Suzhou City, Jiangsu, China has come under fire for allegedly firing employees who could not complete a 5-kilometer (km) race in 30 minutes. This action was carried out on the grounds that they were considered not working hard.

Reporting from Oddity Central, Monday (3/7/2023), one of the employees named Liu did not accept it for that reason. He took the company to court after allegedly being fired for not being able to run 5 km in 30 minutes in 40 degree Celsius temperatures.

Ultimately the Suzhou People’s Court agreed with Liu’s assessment of the situation and ordered the company to pay more than 7,000 yuan in compensation.

Just a few days into the job earlier, Liu was told by a company executive that he had to take a long-distance running test. His colleagues warned that this was no joke and that he would almost certainly be fired if he failed.

Liu didn’t even have time to practice. After running for about 800 meters under the scorching sun, he was getting tired and gave up. Instead of finishing the race, he chose to return to work.

No one said anything to him at that time. Just the next day, he was told he had failed his probation.

The unnamed company explained that new hires must complete a 5km long distance run in 30 minutes. Failing to do so, they are deemed not meeting the ‘hard working spirit’ job requirement.
