A Chinese kindergarten teacher has been sentenced to death after Chinese authorities determined that she poisoned 25 children last year. One of these children has died. According to BBC News it is not yet clear whether she will be executed or given a lethal injection.
The court described the suspect as “despicable” and “mean”. Nor would it have been the first time she has poisoned people. Her husband would also have been slightly injured by this.
In both cases, the woman used sodium nitrate. This is usually used for preserving meat products, but can be toxic in large quantities.
The kindergarten teacher is said to have mixed the material with the porridge of the children, after which many of them passed out or had to vomit.
The woman’s motive has remained unclear. She may have wanted to take revenge on a colleague after a discussion that got out of hand about how to care for the preschoolers.
