A Chinese fighter jet conducted an “unnecessarily aggressive” maneuver near a US military aircraft in international airspace over the South China Sea, the US Department of Defense said on Tuesday.
The US military command in the Indo-Pacific region said in a statement that the maneuver in question was carried out last week by a Chinese J-16 fighter, forcing a US RC-135 aircraft to cross its wake turbulence.
The United States will continue to operate safely and responsibly by air and sea wherever permitted by international law, the statement added. No comment was obtained from the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
American ships and planes
In the past, Beijing has viewed Washington’s dispatch of ships and planes to the South China Sea as not conducive to peace.
Interceptions of this type occur from time to time.
Last December, a Chinese military plane approached three meters from a US military aircraft, forcing it into an emergency maneuver to avoid a collision in international airspace.
