Chinese hackers have stolen tens of thousands of emails from US State Department employees. This was reported by a US Senate official to the Reuters news agency.

This concerns a total of 60,000 emails from 10 accounts of the ministry. Nine employees who fell victim have East Asia and the Pacific region as their diplomatic work area. The other employee deals with Europe.

The hack came to light in July, but its extent is only now becoming clear. The American authorities and Microsoft then reported that the hackers are affiliated with the Chinese government. Beijing denies this. They allegedly gained access to email accounts of about 25 organizations, including the US Departments of Commerce and State, and governments in Western Europe. It is not clear exactly what was stolen.

The hackers managed to obtain a device from a Microsoft developer, with which they could carry out the hack. The group, calling itself Storm-0558, spoofed digital authentication tokens to gain access to email accounts. After a few weeks, Microsoft discovered the hack after Outlook users complained about problems with their accounts.
