Hacker China is suspected of launching its operations targeting government organizations and the private sector across Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia. The Chinese hackers are said to have received financial support from the state.
According to a report from a private US cybersecurity company, Insikt Group, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam were the main targets of this attack. Countries also targeted are Myanmar, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia.
Some of the specific targets described in the report are the Office of the Prime Minister of Thailand and the Thai Army, the Indonesian and Philippine Navy, Vietnam’s National Assembly and its Communist Party Headquarters, and the Malaysian Ministry of Defence.
Insikt Group said the attack targeted high-end military and government organizations in Southeast Asia and was estimated to have lasted for nine months.
“Many of the incidents identified took place over several months, so it is highly likely that individual attackers maintained long-term access to victims’ networks and were able to obtain victim data during this period of time to support intelligence gathering efforts,” Insikt said. Nikkei.
The hacker is said to be using customized malware such as FunnyDream and Chinoxy.
Later Insikt also said that this type of malware is not publicly available and is used by many groups believed to be sponsored by the Chinese government.
In addition, this attack is also in line with the political and economic goals of the Chinese government, thereby further strengthening the suspicion that it is state sponsored.
“We believe this activity is highly likely to involve the state, as the observed targets are high-value government targets, and political targets correspond to cyber-espionage activities, coupled with identified technical links to Chinese state-sponsored activities,” Inskit said. Taipei Times.
However, China’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations.
In the past, Chinese authorities have consistently denied any form of state-sponsored hacking, saying instead that China itself is a prime target for cyberattacks.
