Chinese hackers hacked US government’s wiring system – WSJ: EADaily

Chinese hackers have penetrated the networks of American Internet service providers and obtained information from systems used by the federal government for court-authorized wiretapping. Voice of America reports this* with reference to the Wall Street Journal.

In particular, the networks of Verizon Communications, AT&T and Lumen Technologies were hacked, WSJ writes, citing sources. It is noted that hackers could have access for several months to the network infrastructure used by companies to fulfill court-authorized requests for communications data. The newspaper claims that the hackers gained access to other data held by telecommunications companies.

According to the WSJ, the attack was carried out to gather information. The investigation believes that the hacker group Salt Typhoon is involved.

China’s Foreign Ministry said today that it was not aware of the issue, but stressed that the United States has “created false statements” in the past to “frame” China.

Earlier this year, US law enforcement neutralized a major Chinese hacker group, Flax Typhoon, several months after becoming aware of large-scale cyber espionage by another Chinese-controlled group, Volt Typhoon.

At the time, China’s Foreign Ministry said the country’s cybersecurity authorities had discovered and released evidence that Volt Typhoon was created by an “international ransomware group.”
