Chinese Foreign Ministry Condemns US for Allowing Tsai Ing-wen’s “Transit” Trip to the United States

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thursday issued remarks regarding Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen’s “transit” trip to the United States. Here is the full text of those remarks:

In recent days, in defiance of China’s stern observations and repeated warnings, the United States has stubbornly allowed Tsai Ing-wen’s “transit” trip to the United States and the high-level meeting between Tsai Ing-wen and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, the third-highest ranking official in the US government. They also allowed US officials and members of Congress to get in touch with Tsai Ing-wen and offered her a platform to make separatist remarks in favor of “Taiwan independence”.

In essence, the United States colluded with the Taiwanese authorities and was complicit in attempts by separatists seeking “Taiwan independence” in order to carry out political activities on American soil, to engage in official interaction between the United States and Taiwan and to elevate the substantive relations between the United States and Taiwan.

These acts have gravely violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques, seriously undermined China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sent the wrong signals to separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence”. China firmly opposes these acts and strongly condemns them.

The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations, and it is the precondition and foundation for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. United. In the three Sino-American joint communiqués, the United States unequivocally pledged to maintain only unofficial relations with Taiwan.

However, for a long time, the United States stubbornly stuck to the strategy of “using Taiwan to contain China”, and violated the commitments it had made. They have relentlessly defied the bottom line and made provocations in areas such as official interaction with Taiwan, arms sales to Taiwan, and military collusion with Taiwan, as well as helping Taiwan expand its self- calling it “international space”, and have continually obscured and hollowed out the one-China principle.

Since taking office, Tsai Ing-wen has refused to recognize the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle; it has tolerated, supported and encouraged various types of separatist words and deeds seeking “Taiwan independence” in the island; and she advanced progressive “independence” under various disguises. As a result, relations across the Taiwan Strait have been seriously damaged.

The Taiwan question is at the heart of China’s fundamental interests and constitutes the first red line not to be crossed in relations between China and the United States. “Taiwan independence” is absolutely irreconcilable with peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and it is a path that leads nowhere. In response to the grossly wrong acts of collusion between the United States and Taiwan, China will take resolute and effective measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

We once again urge the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, to keep its commitment not to support “Taiwan independence, the “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”, to immediately stop all forms of official interaction with Taiwan, to stop improving their substantive exchanges with Taiwan, to stop creating tension across the Taiwan Strait, to stop use Taiwan to contain China and to stop going further down a wrong and dangerous path.
