Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A Chinese fighter jet reportedly caught up with a United States (US) B-52 bomber. This happened when the two of them flew over the South China Sea (SCS) last Tuesday.

Quoting the report CNN International, Friday (27/10/2023), a Chinese fighter jet pilot was said to have flown in an unsafe and unprofessional manner. The distance between the two is only about 10 feet.

“The Chinese pilot flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, demonstrating poor airmanship by closing at uncontrolled excessive speed, flying under, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52,” said US-Indopacific Command , Thursday.

“This puts the two planes in danger of colliding,” the military stressed again.

“We are concerned that this pilot did not realize how close he came to causing a collision,” he added.

This news emerged on the sidelines of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s arrival at the White House, to meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security advisor Jake Sullivan. However, it is unclear whether the meeting will be a formal discussion or a more informal meet-and-greet.

However, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden are believed to be meeting on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in San Francisco next month. Although no party has yet confirmed the final plans.

Meanwhile the top Pentagon official in charge of security in the Indo-Pacific, Ely Ratner, said earlier this month the US had seen more examples of “coercive and risky” behavior from Chinese pilots towards its planes. Increased in the last two years in the Eastern and Pacific regions compared to the previous decade.

“Since the fall of 2021, we have seen more than 180 similar incidents,” Ratner said.

“This is a centralized and concerted campaign to engage in this risky behavior to force changes in legitimate US operational activities,” he added.

In recent years, China has used its military power to assert its sovereignty claims in the South China Sea and its surroundings, including Taiwan. In 2022, the Chinese military stepped up its aggressive actions against Taipei, including ballistic missile flights, military flights into Taiwan’s air identification zone, and major drills near the island.

Although Xi says he seeks peaceful unification of Taiwan with China, he has said he has not renounced the use of military force to achieve his goals. According to him, the two must unite at all costs.

World War 3
