Chinese factories set on fire, 2 Myanmar Cities Martial Law

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Military junta Myanmar, imposed martial law in two densely populated cities in Myanmar. This happened after the deadliest demonstration took place, in which 39 people died because of repressive actions by the authorities.

State-run media announced that Hlaingthaya in Yangon and the neighboring city of Shwepyitha would be placed under martial law. The region is the industrial center of Burma, where a number of Chinese investments are located.

“The junta gives administrative powers and martial law courts to regional commanders of Yangon … to exercise security, maintain the rule of law and peace more effectively,” said a broadcaster on state-run TV. AFP, Monday (15/3/2021).

The army and police in recent weeks have cracked down on demonstrators. Not only tear gas, rubber and sharp bullets were fired to quell the protests.

In Hlaingthaya, demonstrators clashed with the authorities on Sunday. The demonstration got hotter when Chinese factories burned down in the city center.

Not only martial law, but the junta also turned off Myanmar’s cellular data nationwide. Quoted from a number of media on Twitter, internet connectivity via cellular data has been turned off nationwide.
