Chinese Entities Still Purchasing Banned Nvidia Chips Despite US Export Restrictions

Chinese law enforcement agencies, government research institutes working on the creation of artificial intelligence, as well as local higher education institutions over the past year have purchased small quantities of Nvidia semiconductors banned by the United States for export to China, Reuters reports today, January 15, citing an analysis of tender documentation. .

The sales, carried out largely by unknown Chinese suppliers, highlight the difficulties Washington faces in stopping Beijing’s access to advanced American microchips despite a US ban. Publicly available tender documents show dozens of Chinese entities have bought and received Nvidia microchips since the restrictions were imposed.

These include the A100 and more powerful H100 chips, which were banned from export to China and Hong Kong in September 2022, as well as the slower A800 and H800 chips developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market, which were also banned in October 2023.

Continued demand for and access to banned Nvidia chips also highlights the lack of available alternatives for Chinese companies at the moment. Before the ban, Nvidia occupied 90% of the Chinese market for artificial intelligence chips, the British news agency notes.
