Chinese Electric Cars Dominate the Munich Motor Show: The Rise of China in the European Auto Market

At the beginning of September, the European and our media were full of news about how Chinese car companies dominated the Munich Motor Show this year. Chinese electric cars invaded Europe like torrential rain – their market share rose from half a percent in 2019 to eight percent today. And that’s just the beginning.

One such news was commented on Twitter by the vice-president of the Union of Industry and Transport, Radek Špicar, saying: “I hope that this does not surprise anyone. We taught them…” His words can be perceived as speaking as a Czech and a European, but also a former manager of the Volkswagen concern. If it doesn’t quite literally apply to electric cars, it definitely applies to Western, especially German industry in general.

WHY WE DON’T HAVE MEDICINES

A few weeks later, the European Commission announced that it would launch an investigation into whether the production of Chinese electric cars is unacceptably subsidized. Reports from the Munich Motor Show culminated in a several-month wave of panic articles in European, especially German, media. But while the reaction of the European carmakers’ lobby to the Commission’s move was positive, it was the reaction of the German union that was cautious. She also mentioned that “possible reactions from China must also be taken into account”. According to some sources, the European Commission was pressured by the French, while the Germans still have years of liberal reflexes.

THE MOST BUREAUCRATIC LABOR CODE

In this case, the European Union tied itself in a bind. On the one hand, it has planned to ban cars with internal combustion engines and, knowing how maddeningly it will annoy the less well-off Europeans in particular, it wants to give them access to the cheapest possible electric cars. On the other hand, he wants to protect the domestic industry. He does not want a repeat of what happened at the beginning of the last decade with photovoltaic panels. It then imposed anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures on them. But in the disputes that arose, consumers gained the upper hand, in 2013 the Commission backed down and the European production of photovoltaic panels practically ceased to exist. Today, China controls not only the global production of solar panels, but also all components of their production chain by at least 80 percent.

FAMILY BOND

The reaction of the association of German car manufacturers can also be seen as a symptom of the “Stockholm syndrome” to which Germany has fallen in terms of relations with China.
