Mainland Center/Reported by Peng Qiyun

A Chinese doctoral student in Canada participated in an amateur boxing match in October last year, but was beaten into a vegetative state by his opponent during the match and is still in a coma. His mother complained that the organizer knew that the opponent was a professional player and allowed the opponent to participate in the rookie group to fight with her son. When the winner was decided, the referee did not call a stop, which resulted in the tragic situation of her son becoming a vegetative state. The mother filed a complaint on February 16, and Canadian police have launched an investigation.

According to a report by the Canadian media “CBC NEWS”, a 26-year-old Chinese student Zhenhuan Lei (transliteration) is a doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia. He loves sports and participated in the British Columbia University in October last year. At the “Western Canadian Martial Arts Championship” held at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, he “vomited multiple times” after the game and fell unconscious and was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.

After Lei Zhenhuan’s mother learned the news, she immediately traveled from China to Canada. Her son is still in a coma. The doctor also said that Lei Zhenhuan “may never recover”, which made the mother quite devastated.

Lei Zhenhuan’s mother complained that her son’s opponent was a professional player who had competed in the Thailand professional competition, but the organizer did not prohibit the opponent from registering and even allowed the opponent to join the rookie group. As a result, during the game, the strength gap between the two sides was too large. The opponent kicked Lei Zhenhuan hard on the head many times. After the game, he vomited many times and became unconscious, causing cerebral hemorrhage and turning him into a vegetative state.

Lei Zhenhuan’s mother angrily accused the organizer of not having adequate insurance. It was reported that the organizer did not call an ambulance immediately and it took medical staff an hour and a half to arrive. Furthermore, it was clear that the winner of the game was already decided, and the referee did not Stop the game immediately and continue to allow your opponent to attack.

Lei Zhenhuan’s mother alleged that the organizer, the World Taekwondo and Karate Union of Canada (WKUC), did not approve the event in accordance with the requirements of Columbia provincial law, so the event was not legally allowed.

Faced with the high medical expenses of more than 100,000 Canadian dollars (approximately NT$2.37 million), as a single mother, she simply could not afford it, so she could only take her son back to her hometown in China to “take care of him for the rest of his life.” Lei’s mother saw her son become a vegetable after the boxing match and described her “hopes were shattered”. She said that her son grew up in a single-parent family and went to Canada to study chemistry for 5 years. She was about to graduate with a doctorate, but something tragic happened, which made her sad. Incessantly.
