NEW YORK (United Nations), May 10 (Xinhua) – China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun on Monday outlined his country’s position on the situation in East Jerusalem during emergency consultations in closed session of the Security Council.
China, Zhang said, is deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions and violence in East Jerusalem. The serious clashes between the Israeli security forces and the Palestinians in recent days are worrying. China condemns violence against civilians, urges all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from any acts of provocation and rhetoric, and supports immediate de-escalation actions.
The Israeli authorities must take the necessary measures to avoid violence, threats and provocations against the Muslim faithful. Likewise, the historic status quo of the holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem must always be upheld and respected.
