Chinese destroyers and warships crossed the middle line of the Taiwan Strait
Taipei, Aug. 5, LETA–AFP. In the course of maneuvers by the Chinese army, 68 Chinese jet fighters and 13 warships crossed the middle line of the Taiwan Strait on Friday, the Taiwanese army said.
“We condemn the Communist Army for deliberately crossing the middle line of the strait and for its threatening behavior in the sea and air around Taiwan,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
China’s Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday that while US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is visiting Taiwan, military maneuvers will be held in several regions in the sea waters around Taiwan.
The maneuvers will continue until Sunday.
Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday evening, despite earlier threats from China over a possible visit.
Upon her arrival, Pelosi said the visit demonstrated Washington’s strong commitment to support Taiwan.
Taiwan and mainland China are governed separately, since in 1949 the Nationalist government of the Republic of China, defeated in the civil war, took refuge on this island, while the People’s Republic of China was proclaimed in the communist-occupied mainland China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory.
Democratic Taiwan lives under the constant threat of Chinese invasion.
