Chinese company BYD surpasses Tesla and becomes the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer

BYD is now the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles in the world, after achieving higher sales results than Tesla in the first six months of 2022.

The Chinese electric vehicle brand registered about 77,000 more vehicles and a 300% year-on-year increase. BYD also overtook LG energy and became the second largest manufacturer of batteries for electric cars. BYD Tang is the company’s first electric model (EV) to arrive in Europe.

BYD has overtaken Tesla, which is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles. The Chinese company, backed by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, sold more cars than Tesla in the first half of the year. BYD totaled 641,000 vehicles sold, but Tesla recorded only 564,000 purchases. Compared to the same period last year, BYD recorded a 300% increase in sales.

Tesla said supply chain problems have caused transactions to decline. Tesla plants are located in areas affected by coronavirus restrictions, while BYD factories are not. BYD is also expanding its market share for electric vehicle batteries, becoming the second largest manufacturer after CATL (global leader in the development and manufacture of lithium-ion batteries), placing LG Energy in third place.

The first EV from BYD to arrive in Europe was Tang. The complete SUV electric has a range of up to 528 km from an 86.4 kWh battery, which can be quickly charged from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes.

An engine with a power of up to 380 kW and a torque of 680 Nm ensures a maximum speed of 180 km / h. The all-wheel drive vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds.

BYD Tang is available for pre-order in Europe, after being launched last year in Norway at a price of about 58,100 EURO ($ 59,998).
