Chinese Comedy Troupe Fined $21 Lakh for Jokes About the PLA

Beijing:Chinese comedy troupe fined $21 lakh (Rs 17.29 crore) for making jokes about the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Li Haoshi, a member of the Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media Company, drew controversy when he compared his dog’s behavior to that of a soldier.

The company and Li Haoshi were fined by the authorities for insulting the military. The company welcomed the move and canceled the contract with Li.

Li’s controversial joke was at a stand-up comedy show in Beijing on Saturday, referring to a quote from President Xi Jinping to the Chinese military.

Its audio was circulated on Chinese social media Weibo. After a person filed a complaint, the authorities started an investigation on Tuesday. One and a half crore rupees were seized from the comedy company on the grounds of illegal earnings. The fine was imposed later. The company was also denied permission to perform in Beijing. Li Haoshi apologized for the incident on his Weibo account.
