Chinese Citizen sparks Controversy After Viral Airport Video in Indonesia
Jakarta, January 20, 2025 – A Chinese citizen has become the center of a social media storm after a video allegedly showing him placing money in his passport while entering Indonesia went viral. The incident, which occurred at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, has raised questions about immigration procedures and the integrity of airport officials.
The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly wrote down the address of a hotel in South Jakarta on his arrival form. Though, when immigration officers attempted too locate him for clarification,he was nowhere to be found. “After the video went viral, our first step was to examine all the officers in the video, one by one and in separate places with the aim of looking for evidence of violations,” said saffar Muhammad Godam, Acting Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas).
The inquiry relied heavily on CCTV footage from the airport, which showed the Chinese citizen taking a wheelchair-assisted passenger route before being redirected to the standard international arrivals route. “The moments of the passport check where monitored by CCTV cameras, and no money was hidden. this Chinese citizen then used Autogate,” Godam explained.
Despite the thorough review, the individual’s whereabouts remain unknown. “We went to the accommodation address according to what he wrote when he arrived, but it turned out he was not staying there,” Godam added. Immigration officials have urged the individual to come forward and clarify the situation. “If the viral video is not true and you intend to cooperate in straightening out the fake video that has been made, please clarify directly by coming to the nearest Immigration office,” Godam concluded.
In a subsequent apology video posted on TikTok under the account @stellaroptics888, the Chinese citizen claimed the Rp. 500,000 (approximately $33) in the video was intended as a visa fee, not a bribe. “The Rp. 500 thousand in the video is just my visa fee, the attitude of the Indonesian Customs and Excise service is very good, giving me instructions, there is no illegal behavior,” he said.
He acknowledged the negative impact of the video and apologized for the misunderstanding. “The bad effect caused by the fake video caused ongoing misunderstandings with the Director General of Indonesian Immigration, this caused several problems for the local government, I really apologize for this,” he stated.
The incident has sparked widespread debate about the transparency of immigration processes and the role of social media in shaping public opinion. As the investigation continues, authorities are calling for cooperation from the individual to resolve the matter.
