Jakarta –
In recent years, car brands from China have increasingly invaded the Indonesian automotive market. According to the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), currently there are 11 Chinese car brands in Indonesia. Not only selling vehicles in Indonesia, they are also encouraged to export.
“There are lots of new companies, especially from China. Now there are 11 Chinese brands operating in Indonesia and approximately 9 have become members of Gaikindo, in fact almost all of them are participating in GIIAS (2023),” said General Chairperson of Gaikindo Yohannes Nangoi in Jakarta (13/7/2023).
“They are continuously submitting to us, so it’s actually positive. We just have to wait a little longer, it will be more crowded and there will be more models and they are usually quicker to export. Some have started (making factories), some are still assembling first ,” continued Nangoi.
Judging by Gaikindo’s official website, there are already 4 companies and 5 Chinese car brands that assemble cars locally in Indonesia. First there is Chery Motor Indonesia with the Chery brand which assembles cars at Reliable Indonesia Motor (HIM), then there is SAIC Motor Indonesia which assembles MG and Hong Yan cars, then SGMW Motor Indonesia with the Wuling brand, and Sokonindo Automobile with the DFSK brand.
Amount brand Chinese cars will increase in the future. Because at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) exhibition, there will be 4 of the newest Chinese car brands launched, namely Haval, Ora, Tank, and Neta. Later the four brands will also assemble cars locally in Indonesia.
“The 11 (Chinese) brands entering are already very good. We want to develop them and we will ask them to export. The point is that. So they enter (to Indonesia), after entering we develop them, they bring their industry, make the industry in Indonesia. If the industry is running, exports are running,” continued Nangoi.
Gaikindo targets the Indonesian industry to export 1 million cars in 2025-2026. So it takes more investment and more new car brands in Indonesia to reach that target.
“Last year, our exports were 470 thousand for CBU. It is hoped that this year it will reach 500 thousand. And in 2025-2026, there will be 1 million vehicles (exported),” said Nangoi.
