Asian cars often had low anti-theft protection, but Chinese brands surpassed everyone

Experts from the publicationAutoreview“came to the conclusion that the security of Chinese cars is extremely low and is at the level of 30 years ago. In general, the number of thefts in Russia has been declining for several years now, and Chinese cars do not yet appear on the lists of the most stolen models. However, if there is a demand for Chinacars on the black market, their “natural” protection is not enough even to resist an amateur hijacker.
For example, Chinese cars have simple locks without anti-vandal cylinders that can be removed with a screwdriver. Their doors are not protected from “stencil” opening (using a master key through the mechanism of the lock itself). The accessibility of the horn snail allows you to quickly turn off the sound signal, and the hood cables are easily accessible.

Autoreview experts note almost zero resistance to electronic hacking, which is aggravated by the spread of keyless access with poorly protected communication channels. The standard immobilizer is neutralized through connection to the diagnostic connector, which allows you to register additional keys or tags without much hassle. Moreover, electronic codes and key configurations for Chinese cars, according to the magazine, are sold through online stores for 7 thousand rubles: it is enough to know the VIN of the car.
According to the publication, there are two reasons for Chinese carelessness. Firstly, car thefts are practically non-existent in China due to powerful control and surveillance systems. Secondly, automakers do not want to complicate electronic systems in order to reduce communication with Russian dealers: apparently, the language barrier is strong. Autoreview journalists advise owners of Chinese cars to at least think about mechanical locks on the steering shaft.
The less popular the model, the lower the risk of theft

So far, Chinese cars are not the leaders of the stolen hit parade. For example, according to statistics from VSK-Insurance, among the cars insured under comprehensive insurance, the most stolen cars in 2023 were Hyundai (31%), Kia (18%), Lada (11%), Mitsubishi (4%) and Chery (4). %). In the Absolut Insurance company, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota became the leaders, and in RESO-Garantia – Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Lexus, Toyota, LADA, BMW and Renault.
Based on the experience of past years, car thieves prefer two types of cars: popular among the people and prestigious in criminal circles. The same Hyundai and Kia are in demand among swindlers because before the crisis they were the most popular foreign brands, which created a high demand, for example, for spare parts. Cars like the BMW X6 or Lexus LX570 are often stolen “for the client”, since the models are respected in well-known circles.
Chinese cars do not yet fall into any of these categories. But since sales of Chinakars amount to hundreds of thousands of units per year, the situation will soon change. And Chery’s inclusion in insurance statistics reminds of this.
Yes, sometimes it worries me No, there is an anti-theft system I hope for comprehensive insurance I have a non-theft model
A separate special project was dedicated to protecting a car from theft. Another problem with Chinese cars is poor corrosion resistance (but not for all models).
Important changes await us in the spring: the government has banned gray imports of cars from China, which will certainly affect prices.
