Chinese Bank Non-Cash Payments Continue to Grow in Third Quarter 2023, Reaching 1.32 Trillion Yuan

BEIJING, Dec. 24, 2023 (Xinhua) – Data from the People’s Bank of China (the central bank) showed that non-cash payments handled by Chinese banks maintained steady growth in the third quarter of 2023.

According to a report issued by the central bank, non-cash payments via bank cards, electronic payment methods, commercial papers, credit transfers and other settlements reached 1,326.19 trillion yuan (about 186.91 trillion US dollars) during this period, an increase of 3.92 percent year on year.

Electronic payments accounted for the lion’s share of non-cash payments, with the total transaction value reaching 858.34 trillion yuan, the report said.

A closer look at electronic payment media data showed that mobile payments expanded by 10.1 percent compared with the same period last year to reach 137.71 trillion yuan.

Bank card transactions in the third quarter also rose by 1.74 percent year on year, reaching 260.77 trillion yuan, the data revealed.
