Chinese Announcer Suspended for Outrageous Remarks on Japan Earthquake and Fukushima Water – Kyodo News

Announcer at Hainan Broadcasting Station in China

Remarks about “karma” related to Fukushima contaminated water

Kyodo News: “Deteriorating sentiment toward Japan is the background”

It has been reported that a Chinese announcer was suspended after hearing the news that Japan suffered heavy damage due to an earthquake, making an outrageous remark that “earthquakes are karma.”

According to Chinese local media, Baidu, Weibo, etc. on the 3rd, China’s Hainan Radio and TV suspended its announcer ‘Xiao Chenghao’ for making inappropriate remarks on personal social media related to the Japanese earthquake.

The day before, Xiao posted on his social media account, “Is retaliation coming? A post saying, “A magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits Japan!”

He also related this earthquake to the ocean discharge of contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and reportedly made a statement to the effect that “the Noto Peninsula earthquake is Japan’s karma.”

He continued, “On the first day of 2024, a major earthquake occurred in Japan. Local media reported that he continued to make strong remarks, saying, “In 2024, all of Japan will be enveloped in dark clouds.”

Accordingly, Hainan Radio and TV began an investigation into Xiao’s remarks and suspended him from his duties. Even in China, public opinion criticizing this is forming.

Hu Xijin, a former editor-in-chief of China’s state-run Global Times (GT), said on his personal social media account, “I support Hainan Radio and TV’s (honesty) decision.” “We must receive it,” he criticized.

Some local media reported, “It is shocking that professional media workers who cater to populism and prioritize traffic (views) lack the basic level of awareness and lack humanistic qualities.”

Meanwhile, Kyodo News reported that there were posts on Chinese social media that seemed to rejoice over the Noto Peninsula earthquake and Haneda Airport fire, and that “deteriorating sentiment toward Japan appears to be the background.”
