Chinese and US leaders comment on Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping

Washington claims to support the “one China” policy, while Beijing calls the recent events a “provocation.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping and United States President Joe Biden reacted to the visit of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on Tuesday, August 2.

Thus, the Chinese leader said during a video message that the visit of the American speaker is another demonstration of the “uncivilized campaign of the imperialists.”

“We continue to look at the world with wide eyes so as not to miss a single provocation from American reactionaries,” he said.

In turn, the coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, John Kirby, during the briefing said that Joe Biden respects Nancy Pelosi’s decision to go to Taiwan.

At the same time, the Washington representative stressed that the speaker’s visit does not contradict the US “one China” policy.

“The United States does not support Taiwan independence and has recently brought this position to the attention of the PRC at the highest level,” Kirby said.

The US expects Beijing to continue to take action in response to Pelosi’s trip in the long term, he said.

Recall that after the plane with Nancy Pelosi landed in Taipei, Chinese Foreign Ministry threatenedthat they will take “all necessary measures to resolutely defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
