Chinese Ambassador’s Comments on Former Soviet States Threaten Beijing’s Relations with EU

China’s ambassador, Lu Shaye, has raised concerns about the sovereignty of former Soviet states, jeopardising Beijing’s relationships with the European Union (EU). The outburst has come at a crucial point in EU-China relations as EU leaders debate a new policy towards China. Lu’s controversial comments could undermine President Xi Jinping’s attempts to position China as a peacemaker in Ukraine and worsen tensions with countries that do not trust China as a global power. The EU’s new policy towards China seeks to level the playing field and expect Beijing to act as a defender of international rules and norms. Though some have questioned reading too much into one diplomat’s comments, Lu’s background suggests he may have more license as a “wolf warrior” diplomat to speak his mind. Despite the controversy, support of the ambassador in China may remain strong as his comments were likely intended to emphasise Taiwan’s lack of sovereignty and legitimacy under international law.
