Reports popping up on Chinese media sites said Dong Jingwei, head of counterintelligence at the Ministry of State Security, secretly flew from Hong Kong to the US on February 10.

Rumors circulated that Jingwei had conveyed important information about the theory of the leak of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus that causes COVID-19 from a laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The theory has actually been rejected by many pundits over the past 18 months, but is now being revived mainly by US officials.
If the rumors are true, Dong Jingwei will be the highest level defector ever from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
The evidence may even have sparked US President Joe Biden’s backlash on an investigation into the country’s origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden announced in late May a new review of the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, having closed previous investigations.
He has now asked the US intelligence community to redouble its investigations to see if the virus that causes COVID-19 jumped from an animal host to humans, or if it was accidentally released from a Wuhan research laboratory.
