China’s Rising Fleet Supersedes Russia and Causes Concern for the US

China is very close to the United States, and far surpasses Russia, in the superiority points of the ranking of the “world’s purest fleets”; This increases Washington’s concern, especially with the exacerbation of tension with Beijing over the Taiwan crisis and influence in the South China Sea.

Commenting on Sky News Arabia, a military expert predicted that Beijing would soon “remove” the US fleet from the “most powerful” list, while a political researcher enumerates China’s military and commercial motives to accelerate the modernization of its fleet, which is expected to reach it.

According to a classification placed by the “Global Directory of Modern Military Warships” on its website about the list of the most powerful fleets for the year 2023, the United States of America ranked first with 323.9 points, China came second with 318.5 points, while Russia got 242.5 points.

The guide relied, in the classification, on a comprehensive monitoring of the strengths and weaknesses of war fleets around the world.

American concern

Previously, US Navy leaders warned that the size of the military and civilian fleet that China possesses would make it able to impose military maritime control and shipping; What threatens the national security of the United States.

In a speech at the National Press Club in the United States, last February, US Secretary of the Navy, Carlos del Toro, said that the Chinese navy has a “significant advantage” over its American counterpart in terms of fleet size.

He spoke in particular about the fact that Beijing has 13 shipyards, “some of them with a capacity greater than what we have, and this represents a real threat,” according to what was reported by the American “CNN” network.

Displace America

The military expert, Imad al-Shami, expects that China, “which has been able to reach this position within 20 years, will displace the United States very soon from the throne of the most powerful global fleets.”

Al-Shami attributes China’s arrival to this advanced ranking to:

• The integration of the civilian and military ship industry has given China a great advantage, and we have recently seen many civilian ships armed with machine guns, medium weapons and air defense radars.

• If Washington was making the difference in its favor with aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines, then China, during the past five years, intensified the manufacture of submarines and aircraft carriers, and within a year, new aircraft carriers and submarines will enter service in the army.

China has also started adding artificial intelligence techniques within the army units, and this will certainly add more power to it.

• In addition to advanced technology in the ship industry, Beijing’s possession of the largest fleet in the world will make it top the list of the most powerful fleets.

Al-Shami points out that one of China’s motives for accelerating the modernization of its fleet is that it is “sure that the next confrontation will be at sea,” referring to a possible conflict between China and Taiwan, in which America may stand with its fleet alongside Taye.

encircle the seas and oceans

Mazen Hassan, a researcher on China, agrees with his colleague that China is modernizing its defense establishment. Prepare for a confrontation at any time.
And he adds to this other motives for Beijing, related to extending its economic arms in the world, and protecting the sea lanes through which its trade passes.

He adds, explaining:

• 90 percent of the world’s trade takes place in the seas and oceans, and if China succeeds in providing transportation and freight services at prices lower than other shipping ships; It can certainly command the roads and lanes without it costing it a single shot.

China is eyeing the ways that make its economy steel against any sanctions.

• Control of the ship industry will give it a lot of power and superiority over its traditional rival, Washington.

• The next conflict will be at sea in the South China Sea, and this means that China has chosen the weapon that will guarantee its supremacy, and America seems to have neglected this, and left the space for Beijing to control.

• As for Russia, the Ukraine war affected its fleet, revealing the negatives within it after the successful attacks launched against it by the Ukrainian army.
