China’s non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play an important role in promoting human rights development and reforming and improving the global governance system, a think tank said in Geneva on Tuesday.
The experts made the statement at an event called “Promoting the protection and sustainable development of human rights through NGO cooperation” held in Geneva on the sidelines of the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Zhu Guijie, deputy secretary-general of the China Association for International Understanding, said China’s NGOs have helped promote the development of the cause of human rights in the country.

Li Juan, a researcher at the Human Rights Research Center of Central South China University, said China’s NGOs have played an irreplaceable role in promoting rights protection and sustainable development. At a time of rising global tensions, closer international cooperation among NGOs can significantly contribute to building a more just, equitable and sustainable world, Li said.
Wei Dandan, assistant secretary of the China Foundation for Rural Development, offered examples to illustrate how her organization has helped low-income people reduce poverty and pursue development. Qian Xiaofeng, regional development director of Amity Foundation, said NGOs can play an important role in protecting the rights of vulnerable groups.
China’s NGOs have also strengthened cooperation with international partners and improved their ability to work professionally on international and multilateral platforms, Qian said.
Christoph Stuckelberger, president of the Geneva Agape Foundation, said countries should support each other and grow together in a spirit of brotherhood, underscoring the importance of cross-border exchanges and interactions between NGOs.
