Jakarta – A ‘mysterious’ pneumonia respiratory disease appears to be attacking children in China. A number of parties are worried that this mysterious disease will become a pandemic like COVID-19.

However, in China, recently news about the increase in respiratory diseases, especially among children, has increasingly spread. Authorities in China suspect that this disease is related to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
The reason is that there is a risk, the circulation of viruses such as influenza and mycoplasma pneumoniae, a common bacterial infection that usually attacks children, occurred after efforts to prevent transmission of the Corona virus were relaxed.
“There is a reasonable hypothesis that this might also happen in other parts of the world when restrictions are lifted,” said a Dutch virologist who advises WHO on COVID-19, Marion Koopmans, quoted by Reuters, Thursday (24/11/2023).
Virologist Tom Peacock of Imperial College London, who has been closely monitoring the emergence of new coronavirus variants, said there were tools available to ‘fairly quickly’ transmit influenza or emerging coronaviruses. As a result, the impression arises that it is impossible for this disease to just appear without realizing it.
“(I) suspect this will probably be something more common or a combination of things for example COVID, flu, RSV. But hopefully we will know more soon,” he said.
