Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Joe Biden administration’s efforts to block access to advanced chips to China to hinder the country’s technological development have been in vain. In fact, China is increasingly motivated to develop technology independently without foreign dependence.

Most recently, the GPU manufacturer from China, Moore Threads, announced its newest graphics card for AI called ‘MTT S4000’. The flagship will be used in the KUAE Intelligent Computing Center, which is a data center where each cluster contains 1,000 S4000 GPUs.

Moore Threads also collaborates with several Chinese companies, one of which is Lenovo, to build a hardware and software ecosystem.

The Toms Hardware report says the S4000 is more reliable than the 2018 GPU from Nvidia used in Tesla servers. However, the S4000 cannot beat Ampere and Ada Lovelace which were launched in 2020 and 2022.

However, the S4000 can support artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model (LLM) technology for generative services such as ChatGPT.

One KUAE cluster is said to be able to train an AI model in around 1 month, but it depends on the task given, quoted Wednesday (20/12/2023).

Even though it cannot be compared to veteran chip manufacturers from the US such as Nvidia and Intel, the development of China’s chip industry deserves a thumbs up. If it continues to show improvement, it is not impossible that China can become truly independent and even beat the mature US industry.
