FTV News Observatory aired an exclusive interview with Lai Qingde on the 2nd. When Lai Qingde talked about cross-strait exchanges in the program, he mentioned that it was China that closed the door, not Taiwan. Lai Qingde pointed out that China should actually thank the people of Taiwan, because China’s economy has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 20 or 30 years, the largest foreign investment comes from Taiwan, and the number of talents who go to China is also large, which is equivalent to bringing talents, capital, technology and professionalism to China. He said it was a show of goodwill; he and Tsai Ing-wen both expressed concern about the flooding in Hebei a few days ago, and the Taiwanese people even contributed money and effort.
Lai Qingde continued, hoping that after he is elected, China can understand that the two sides of the strait do not have to go on like this, because Taiwan can help China, and a prosperous Taiwan will help China’s progress and stability. As long as equal dignity is maintained, Taiwan is happy to cooperate with China. Exchanges and cooperation to enhance the well-being of people on both sides of the strait. However, if the premise of China’s exchanges is to force Taiwan to give up its sovereignty, it will be difficult for the strong.
Lai Qingde also mentioned that the public can compare the proposals for cross-strait exchanges proposed by different political parties. Whether it is to sign a service trade agreement with China or the 1992 consensus, it is basically going back. Accepting the one-China principle is equivalent to giving up sovereignty, but there is no Sovereign peace is not real peace. Only strength can ensure sovereignty and peace.
Regarding the “four pillars of peace” proposed by Lai Qingde a few days ago, Taoyuan City Councilor Yu Beichen asked in the program, if China did not stop military harassment, would it take tough measures to prepare for war in the future, or would it be an option to “put down the gun” instead? Lai Qingde replied that the situation in the Taiwan Strait has changed. The Chiang Kai-shek period was a continuation of the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party.
