China’s Made Sun Sets New Record, Flashes 101 Seconds

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Scientist China reportedly managed to set a new record in the project Artificial Sun atau China Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST).

The new record was set because the Chinese government reported that scientists managed to hold plasma at 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds in their latest experiment.

EAST is nuclear fusion research to mimic the process the Sun uses to generate massive amounts of energy, where intense heat and pressure combine to produce a plasma of atomic nuclei fused at incredible speeds.

Scientists work with various experimental devices to trigger and study these reactions on Earth. Experts rate the donut-shaped tokamak, such as the TIMUR at the China Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the most promising approach.

The Tokamak has a series of magnetic coils designed to hold a stream of superheated hydrogen plasma in place long enough for the reaction to occur. In 2016, scientists at EAST managed to heat a hydrogen plasma to about 50 million degrees Celsius and hold it for 102 seconds.

Researchers then raised it to 100 million degrees Celsius, more than six times hotter than the Sun’s core, in 2018 and held on for about 10 seconds, the report said. New Atlas.

Launch Xinhua, EAST uses the ocean’s abundant deuterium to provide a steady stream of clean energy. Deuterium in one liter of seawater can produce, through a fusion reaction, the equivalent of 300 liters of gasoline.

In contrast to fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, which are threatened with exhaustion and threaten the environment, the raw materials needed for an ‘artificial sun’ are virtually unlimited on earth.

Therefore, fusion energy is considered an ideal ‘final energy’ with the potential to help China achieve carbon neutrality. Fusion energy, one of the greatest frontiers of physics today, requires not only the best scientific research capabilities but also massive experimental instruments.
