China’s Latest Map News and Indonesia’s Position According to UNCLOS 1982

Jakarta

Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi opened up about China’s latest map news that includes claims to parts of the maritime territory of Malaysia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) near Sabah and Sarawak, Brunei, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. Retno said Indonesia’s position was consistent with referring to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which was ratified in 1982.

Indonesia’s position is not a new position, but a position that has always been conveyed consistently, namely that any line drawn, any claim made must be in accordance with the 1982 UNCLOS,” Retno said after a meeting at the DPR’s Commission I in the MPR/DPR/DPR building. DPD RI, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday (31/8/2023).

Retno emphasized Indonesia’s position in accordance with the 1982 UNCLOS. The UNCLOS is an international agreement that regulates the rights and obligations of each country regarding territorial water boundaries, including the issue of exclusive economic zones, where countries with coastlines have the right to seek marine products and hold exploration of energy sources.

In UNCLOS 1982, several territorial waters are owned by each coastal state, including Indonesia. The territorial waters include inland waters, territorial sea, additional zones, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), continental shelf (LK), and high seas.

It is known that India has protested against the map released by the Chinese government, Monday (28/8). On the map made by China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin plateau disputed with India are Chinese territory.

“We have today lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels with the Chinese side regarding the so-called 2023 Chinese standard map claiming Indian territory,” Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said in a statement.
