China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced on Wednesday that a total of 274 million domestic trips were taken during this year’s Labor Day holiday nationwide, up 70.83 percent year-on-year and beating the 2019 level for the holiday .
During the holiday, domestic tourism revenue totaled 148.056 billion yuan (about 21.42 billion U.S. dollars), up 128.90 percent year on year, the ministry said.
During the holiday, China’s tourism authorities took a series of measures to ensure the proper operation of tourist destinations and enhance the tourist experience, including strengthening food safety surveillance, restricting passenger flows and controlling price caps.
The boom in tourism has also increased the number of trips abroad during the holiday season. Data from Alibaba travel industry Fliggy shows that outbound travel bookings during the holiday season are up 200 percent compared to this year’s Spring Festival.
According to other reports, an estimated 270.19 million passengers, an average of 54.038 million passengers per day, were carried by the country’s rail, road, waterway and civil aviation during the Labor Day holiday. This represents an average daily increase of 162.9 percent over the same period in 2022.
