SHANGHAI – China’s healthcare regulator has come forward to defend the efficacy of off-patent medicines distributed through public hospitals. The National Healthcare Security Management (NHSA) addressed quality concerns, asserting that an examination found these claims to be unsubstant.
In an interview with the state-backed People’s Daily newspaper, the NHSA explained that rigorous evaluations ensure generic drugs match the quality and efficacy of original research drugs. Post-approval, these drugs are strictly supervised to maintain standards.
Last month, the NHSA initiated an investigation into these concerns. They consulted experts and hospital heads to determine the validity of the claims. The regulator concluded that perceptions of reduced effectiveness in generic drugs, such as anaesthetics and laxatives, stemmed from “subjective feelings.”
China introduced the bulk-buy program in 2018 to negotiate lower prices from drug manufacturers. This programme has since expanded across the country. The drugs on the list include off-patent blockbusters from Western pharmaceutical giants and generics produced by local players.
While the scheme pressures margins, many drugmakers participate in tenders to supply public hospitals in large volumes. This approach helps in maintaining affordability and accessibility of essential medicines.
