China’s Guangdong city eases COVID-19 rules in various districts

BEIJINGNov 30 – The Chinese city of Guangdong on Wednesday eased rules on preventing the COVID-19 in several districts, in an attempt to implement the rules that the authorities announced this month to lighten the burden of the strict “zero contagion” policy.

Guangdong, China’s manufacturing hub, has been hit hard by recent outbreaks of COVID-19 and residents of the southern city took to the streets to protest against the strict coronavirus prevention rules at the weekend.

The easing of restrictions comes after the city of 19 million recorded fewer cases than COVID-19 in the last few days.

The city’s district authorities, including Haizhu, Baiyun, Fanyu, Tianhe, Conghua, Huadu and Liwan, said in statements they were lifting the temporary lockdowns.

One of the districts, Conghua, said it would allow in-person classes to resume in schools and reopen restaurants and other businesses, including cinemas.

Some parts of the city classified as “high risk” will remain closed.

Guangdong is a large port city north of Hong Kong in Guangdong province, where authorities announced on Tuesday that they would allow close contacts of cases of COVID-19 were quarantined at home, instead of being forced to go to shelters.
