Recently, China’s first hydrogen fuel-powered ship, “Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1”, made its maiden voyage at the Three Gorges Visitor Center located at Pier 9, Wujiagang District, Yichang City. my country’s hydrogen fuel cell technology has achieved zero breakthrough in the application of inland waterway ships. The “Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1” has a total length of 49.9 meters, a width of 10.4 meters, and a depth of 3.2 meters. It has a top speed of 28 kilometers per hour and a cruising range of up to 200 kilometers. The ship was jointly developed and built by China Three Gorges Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Research Institute and other units.

“Compared with traditional fuel-powered ships, the ‘Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1’ is expected to replace 103.16 tons of fuel every year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 343.67 tons.” Technical personnel said that the rated output power of the ship’s hydrogen fuel cell can reach 500 kilowatts. After being delivered and put into use, the ship will be used for transportation, inspection, emergency and other work in the Three Gorges Reservoir area and between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam, with zero emissions and zero pollution throughout the process.
In order to solve the fuel endurance problem of “hydrogen boats”, a hydrogen energy supply station was built at Yangjiawan Wharf downstream of the Three Gorges Dam. This “China Three Gorges Green Power and Green Hydrogen Demonstration Station” is the first inland river terminal type hydrogen production and hydrogenation integrated station in China. It uses the clean electricity generated by the Three Gorges Power Station to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen. Hydrogen is directly supplied to hydrogen energy ships through compression, storage, filling and other links, enabling safe and rapid hydrogen filling of 240 kg/hour.
The “Yangtze Three Gorges 1”, which will make its maiden voyage in Yichang in 2022, is the world’s largest pure electric cruise ship independently developed by my country. It uses green electricity to replace fuel, promoting the “electrification of the Yangtze River”. The independently developed “Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1” this time has promoted the “hydrogenation of the Yangtze River” through green hydrogen energy technology.
