A man in China’s Gansu province has been arrested for allegedly using ChatGPT to generate a fake train accident story. This is China’s first arrest in an AI-related investigation as Beijing tightens its deepfake technology.
The story, which claimed that nine construction workers were killed in the accident in a northwestern China town, Gansu, garnered more than 15,000 clicks after being posted on social media on April 25, the local police station of the city of Pingliang.
China’s new deepfake rules prohibit service providers and users from using such technology to produce, disclose and fabricate false information.
The rules, which came into effect on January 10, are designed to restrict the use of generative AI technology to modify online content.
A total of 25 Baijiahao accounts, a blog-like platform owned by Chinese tech giant Baidu, reported the “accident” involving IP addresses from various locations, the police statement said.
The suspect, named Hong, was identified and arrested for fabricating false information after police traced all accounts and determined his company was involved.
Hong allegedly edited and uploaded ChatGPT-generated news on Baidu’s platform, local police said, adding that the investigation was continuing.
