China started drilling a well more than 10,000 meters deep on Thursday. The goal: find shale gas.
Why is this important?
Although the war in Ukraine has caused an energy crisis that has mainly affected Europe, other countries are now also thinking about how to improve their energy supply. That includes China. The more one can rely on one’s own gas, the more certain one is.
In the news: China National Petroleum Corporation on Thursday began drilling a hole more than 10,000 meters deep in Shendi Chuanke 1, one of the deepest of its kind.
It promises to be a tough task, but Beijing is confident it will be worth it.
The details: The second “ultra-deep” well in two months.
