Most extensive education in the world

2007/04/23

As the world’s most populous country, China is currently striving to have the world’s most comprehensive education system. At present there are more than 200 million people nationwide attending all-day schools at various levels.

The education system in China is divided into pre-school, elementary school, middle school and higher education. Compulsory schooling lasts 9 years from elementary school to the lower level of middle school and is free of tuition. Annual fees for textbooks and ancillary expenses are only a few hundred yuan.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of compulsory education. The popularization rate of compulsory education in China has risen from less than 80% more than 10 years ago to over 90% today. For the coming years, the Chinese government will focus on developing compulsory education and higher education in the countryside. With this, all children should go to school and first-class universities in the world should be established in China.

In China, state-funded education plays the most important role. Recently, private education has also developed, but it cannot be equated with state-financed education in terms of scope and level.
