SPACE — On December 1 2013, China launched its first mission to land a rover robot on the moon. The Chang’e 3 spacecraft lifted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on a modified Long March 3B rocket. Inside, sits quietly a robot explorer named Yutu.
The mission was named Chang’e after the moon goddess in Chinese mythology. Meanwhile, Yutu is the Jade Rabbit, who is a friend of the moon goddess.
Chang’e 3 arrived in lunar orbit five days after launch and landed on the lunar surface one week later, on December 14. This is the first spacecraft to make a soft landing on the moon in 37 years.
