China’s Central Bank to Issue Commemorative Coins and Banknotes for 2024 New Year

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) — China’s central bank will issue commemorative coins and banknotes for the 2024 New Year from Friday (Dec. 15) onwards.

The People’s Bank of China on Thursday said the set of commemorative coins and banknotes includes gold coins, silver coins, bronze coins and banknotes, all of which are legal tender in China.

The obverse of the gold and silver coins incorporates traditional Chinese patterns that reflect auspiciousness, the name of the country, and the year of issue.

The tail side of the gold coin has the Chinese character “fu,” which means having good fortune. and dragon cartoon patterns to celebrate the Chinese zodiac year, the Year of the Dragon or the Year of the Dragon.

The tail side of the silver coin incorporates the Chinese character “fu” and is decorated with lanterns, deer, and butterflies.

Meanwhile, the banknote has elements related to the Year of the Dragon, including a dragon design and a child holding up a lantern to lure a dancing dragon.

Incidentally, the Chinese zodiac consists of 12 animals that reflect human characteristics, including the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon or large snake, small snake, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog, and pig or pig.
