China’s Ambitious Plans for Lunar Water Extraction: A New Era of Moon Base Research

In addition to America, China is also trying to send people to the moon in the future, where, according to their plans, they will build a complete base, where there will be researchers who need water, which could be extracted from the soil of the moon with the help of new technology, it will be able to spend a longer time.

Researchers have known for a long time that there is a lot of water on the Moon, mostly in the form of water ice, which is not easy to extract. Soil samples collected by China’s Zhang-o?5 lunar probe show that the lunar regolith is rich in hydrogen. Based on this, a group of Chinese researchers technology created, with which they can extract 50 liters of water from 1 ton of regolith.

The method is very simple: hydrogen and oxygen must be heated to very high temperatures to turn them into water. The study showed that if a lunar regolith is heated above 1200 K by concave mirrors, one gram of molten lunar regolith can produce 51.76 mg of water. Of course, the method is not easy to implement, but scientists still have plenty of time to develop better methods.
