China has the ambition to overtake the United States as a leading world power, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said today, while issuing a new warning in relation to Taiwan, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
Washington has identified China as the main challenge for the US in the long term and is redoubling its efforts to increase the US presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
“I think their goal is to become a dominant power in the world — militarily, economically and diplomatically,” Blinken said at a forum organized by The Atlantic magazine, responding to a question about China’s intentions. “This is what Chinese President Xi Jinping is aiming for,” he added.
“In a way, it’s not a surprise. China has an extraordinary history. I think if you watch and listen to Chinese leaders, you’ll find that they’re trying to reclaim what they see as their rightful place in the world,” Blinken noted.
While he claims to be taking a sober view of relations with China and increasing pressure on it, the Biden administration is trying to maintain a dialogue with Beijing to “responsibly manage” tensions between the two giants. Blinken even visited Beijing in June. However, tensions remain high, especially over Taiwan, which the Chinese government considers part of China.
The stakes are “extremely high,” the US secretary of state said, noting the island’s role in the global economy, mainly as a center for the production of cutting-edge semiconductors.
“If there is a crisis over Taiwan, precipitated by China’s actions, there will be a global economic crisis,” Blinken warned and urged Beijing to stop trying to change the status quo.
“We want – everyone wants – peace and stability, and everyone wants the status quo to be maintained,” he said.
